MY STORY,briefly
Born September 29, 1954, in Cuba, I emigrated to the United States with my parents and younger brother at the age of fifteen. I arrived in Los Angeles in 1969 to finish my high school education, later attending the University of California, Irvine, where I earned a PhD in Latin American literature in 1984.
That same year I published my first novel and began a five-year teaching post at Wichita State University, Kansas. By 1989, I was feeling stifled by the demands of academia and finding scant time for my creative writing. Coincidentally, the summer of that year I was invited, with six other Latino writers, to be part of a ten-day workshop led by the Nobel Laureate Gabriel García Márquez at the Sundance Film Institute in Utah, sponsored by Robert Redford. During the course of that transforming experience, Márquez (or Gabo, as he liked to be called), encouraged me to devote my time solely to writing. And that was all the encouragement I needed. The Greatest Performance
Nacido en Cuba el 29 de septiembre de 1954, emigré a Estados Unidos con mis padres y hermano menor a los quince años. Llegué a Los Ángeles en 1969 y terminé la escuela secundaria, para luego asistir a la Universidad de California en Irvine. Allí obtuve el doctorado en Literatura Latinoamericana en 1984.
Ese mismo año publiqué mi primera novela y conseguí un puesto de profesor en Wichita State University, Kansas. Al despuntar el 1989 me estaba sintiendo agobiado por las exigencias académicas, sin lograr encontrar tiempo suficiente para mi trabajo creativo. Casualmente, el verano de ese año me invitaron, con otros seis escritores latinos, a participar en un taller de diez días dirigido por el premio Nobel Gabriel García Márquez en el Sundance Film Institute en Utah, patrocinado por Robert Redford. Durante el transcurso de esa experiencia transformadora, Márquez (o Gabo, como le gustaba llamarse), me instó a que me dedicara exclusivamente a la escritura. Y ese fue todo el incentivo que necesitaba. Dejé la academia y regresé a California para cultivar mi pasión…
